Comprising an area of 910 sq. mi. (2357 km ), it has low fertile land. The county takes its name from the principal town, Wexford. The name comes from the Norse term waesfjord, meaning inlet of the mud-flats. Highest point is Mt. Leinster (795 m., 2610 ft.) The economy is chiefly agricultural; there is also much maritime activity. It was the site of an invasion by Anglo-Normans in 1169 at the behest of Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster.
