According to some, Moldovans are same as Romanians, the Moldovan ethnic group is none other but the Romanian ethnic group of the Republic of Moldova. However, despite the same origin and culture, which they share with Romanians, the modern Moldovan national identity is based on the identification with the country of Moldova, and its separate political history.

Moldovans represent people of Moldova, either part of Romania or the Republic of Moldova. So in a more logical way to explain the meaning of the word Moldovan is to see a geographical or regional community of the people. Nowadays you can denominate a Russian Moldovan given the fact that he or she being a Russian but born in Moldova.
