The Quake III engine was developed by id Software and is used in many games. In its heyday, it competed with the Unreal engine although both engines were widely licensed.

The Quake III engine originated from the Quake and Quake II engines, which were totally different from the DOOM engine. Though most believe that the Quake III engine was the base for the Doom 3 engine, they are wrong. The Doom 3 rendering engine was written from the ground up by John Carmack.

At QuakeCon 2005, John Carmack announced that the Q3 source code would be released under the GPL. On August 19, 2005 id Software released the Quake 3 engine source under the GPL licence.

Games with the Q3 engine:

Games with the Q3 engine are recognised by a console appearing before the game runs. Then, when you bring out the in-game console (using the ~ key), the font is in Q3 font (Where in Q1 and Q2 engine games, the font is more of a classical console type font). With the DOOM engine, the font is the DOOM menu font (Red, Uppercase). The Q3 font is also used in the DOOM 3 engine. With some of the games using the Q3 engine, there are two separate executable files, one for Single Player and one for Multiplayer, with the notable exception of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.
