Dave Gibbons (born April 14, 1949) is a British writer and artist of comics.
Gibbons broke into British Comics quite quickly working on horror and action titles for both DC Thomson and IPC. When 2000 AD was set up Gibbons was brought in as an Art Director and to draw one of the original strips Harlem Heroes as well as the occasional short story. After the first year Gibbons switched to Dan Dare, a cherished project for Gibbons who was a fan of the original series. Gibbons also drew a spin-off the Ro-Busters strip and a couple of two part stories of the original ABC Warriors story. Gibbons’ last work for 2000 AD was the first run of Rogue Trooper of which he was also co-creator, after which he concentrated for a time on Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly.
Gibbons was one of the British Comic talents identified by Len Wein in 1982 and began drawing Green Lantern for DC. He is best known in the US for collaborating with Alan Moore on the comics series Watchmen. Amongst Doctor Who fans he is known as the original artist on Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly, drawing the lead comic strips for most of the issues from #1 until #69.
He also contributed to the 1994 Revolution Software title Beneath a Steel Sky.
His most recent work (2005) is a self-penned black and white graphic novel, The Originals. Published by Vertigo, the work is set in the near future, but draws heavily on the imagery of the Mods and Rockers of the 1960s.
His current projects include the DC Comics mini-series The Rann/Thanagar War (which ties into the upcoming Infinite Crisis event miniseries) and Green Lantern Corps: Recharge. Gibbons also provides the cover artwork for Albion, the Wildstorm series plotted by Alan Moore and written by his daugther Leah and her husband.
