The retail chain had 4,600 employees in over 300 stores in 40 states in 2007. The retail chain offers a wide variety of Christian merchandise especially books/Bibles and CDs. Family Christian Stores recently announced their decision to "freeze" all store level employee wages in an effort to save money.
Until 1993, the chain was part of Zondervan, the Christian publishing giant who owns the copyright to the New International Version. The two companies share the same complex in Western Michigan. Family Christian Stores has increased its size through acquisitions, including Joshua's Christian Stores and Shepherd Shoppe.
Christian items and church supplies are also sold over the Internet through the company website. The corporate office is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Some of the larger stores in the chain host large in-store events including concerts for top Christian artists.
