He has received two Dora Awards for the roles of Billy in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, and The Man in On the Verge (Tarragon Theatre).
As a teenager, Hughes lived in London, Ontario where he attended Saunders Secondary School and played French Horn and Violin in the school orchestra and band. He performed in school drama productions and also had roles in plays at Theatre London. Hughes long time partner is fellow actress Megan Follows, best known for her role as "Anne Shirley" in the Anne of Green Gables miniseries. He lives with Follows and her children, Russel and Lyla, spending part of the year in Los Angeles and part of the year in Toronto.
Megan Follows appears with her real life husband, Stuart Hughes, in the television movie Booky Makes Her Mark (for which he received a Gemini Award nomination), Booky and the Secret Santa and Booky's Crush.
