The Hawiye tribe is the largest Somali clans. They live mostly in central and southern Somalia, but also in northern Somalia, northern Kenya, and Ethiopia. It is largely agreed that the Hawiye descended from the Irir Samaale. Some sources, including Human Rights Watch, indicate that Hawiye has allways been the largest Somali clan. Conversely.

Abdullahi Isse, the chairman of the Somali Youth League (which fought for Somalian Independence), and Aden Abdullahi Osman, the first president of Somalia, were both members of the Hawiye clan.
