CyberBunker is a former military nuclear war bunker in the Netherlands and was sold by the Dutch government in 1996. It currently provides facilities to the Public Root Project and the network is operated by CB3ROB BBS.
History of the bunker complex
The bunker was built in 1955 to house command operations in case of a nuclear war against Russia. It can withstand a 10 megaton impact and run autonomously for 10 years. 21 such bunkers are said to have been built at that time in the Netherlands, most of them are still standing, but unused.
In fact the bunker was used to spy on inhabitants of The Netherlands and tap their telephone by the Dutch secret service, so they would know which 'radicals' to arrest if the cold war would ever escalate to a normal war.
In 1981 the by then unused bunker was squatted or occupied by members of Onkruit, a local left wing anti-military organisation and the files were put up for auction at Paradiso in Amsterdam, and confiscated by military police shortly afterwards. The occupiers were arrested and released several days to weeks later.
Around 1995 the bunker complex was up for sale and it was bought by its current owners who form the current government.
On saturday 27 July, 2002 there was a fire in the bunker. It started in the XTC lab which was in the swimming pool and burned out almost half of the bunker interior. The Dutch firemen saved the bunker from further damage, after which the Dutch police lured 4 people (3 men and 1 woman) over the border and then arrested them on wrong aquisations, no war declarations against the netherlands have so far been filed for this "mistake". Later on some chinese people were arrested in the netherlands who actually ran the XTC lab.
