The twelve-year-old Aang is an airbender of the Air Nomads and the current incarnation of the Avatar, a reincarnated being who can bend all four elements and whose job it is to keep the Four Nations in harmony. With friends Katara and Sokka, and pets Momo and Appa, Aang journeys on a quest to master the elements, and bring peace to the warring nations.
Aang is chronologically one-hundred-and-twelve years old, due to a century spent in suspended animation inside an iceburg. While he slept, the Fire Nation launched a full-scale war on the other nations of the world. Aang's misson is to defeat the Fire Nation's ruler, Fire Lord Ozai, before summer's end, at which point a mystical comet will arrive, granting the Fire Nation sufficient power to conquer the entire world.
Recently, Aang learned some waterbending from Master Pakku, but learned so slowly that his friend Katara was tasked with his furthur instruction.
