First published in 1992, it is the story of her grandmother, her mother and herself, and in telling their stories gives a unique perspective on 20th century Chinese history. The book won two awards: the 1992 NCR book award and the 1993 British Book of the Year Award (it was eligible for the latter because Jung Chang now lives in London).
Controvery followed in mainland China, where there has been an effort to cast doubt on claims contained within it. The book is officially banned and only pirated copies, or those from Hong Kong and Taiwan, are available. Outside China it has been praised by many scholars as an informative look at the lives of the Chinese people during the Cultural Revolution.
