A mystery may refer to:

  • In common usage, a mystery is a description for anyt thing which is unknown or yet unexplained.
  • In religious usage, mystery commonly refers to that which is unknowable (as well as unknown or unexplained) and hence alludes to the concept of faith in the divine —hence the term divine mystery. According to the Encyclopedia Catholica, a mystery is:
"a supernatural truththat of its very nature lies above the finite intelligence".
    • In Christianity, a mystery (mysterion) is an effectual mystical action that uses outward, visible signs as a means of conveying inward, spiritual grace. In the West, this is also given the Latin term for a signed and sealed pledge: sacrament (See also Sacred Mysteries).
