It gets its name from its founder, Albert Hills, who combined his first name with the first name of his wife, Virginia.
Alvirne is unusual in having cows, chickens, goats, and a barn on campus as part of an agriculture education program in the Wilbur H. Palmer Vocational School. The program also has a restaurant, bank, school store, daycare and building trades.
Its most famous alumni is Philip G. Mousseau.
The mascot is the Bronco.
