The film was originally reported to be in planning as early as October 2006 with Karthi, whose first film was yet to release at the time, and Sandhya being signed on to the project directed by Selvaraghavan. The film consequently began its shoot in November 2006 and was produced by R. Ravindran and White Elephants, Selvaraghavan's new production house in collaboration with cinematographer Arvind Krishna and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. Furthermore noted theatre actor, Y. Gee. Mahendra was signed on to play the role of a modern-age father in the film. However after a brief filming schedule, the film failed to progress and Selvaraghavan, Ravindran and Karthi moved to make another film, Aayirathil Oruvan, in place of it. During the period, the production house White Elephant also collapsed, after Selvaraghavan fell out with both his partners.

The film was relaunched on November 7, 2008 and filming started with a new cast of Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah in the leading roles. Following his split with his original technical team, Ramji and G. V. Prakash Kumar had taken over the responsibilities of being the cinematographer and music director respectively. The film was described to be a quick project with Selvaraghavan and Dhanush's sister, Vimalageetha taking up the production reins. However, the film was shelved again for unknown reasons as Selvaraghavan continued with the same team with Aayirathil Oruvan. Again after a brief schedule, the film was later announced as shelved after a period of little activity in June 2009 due to Selvaraghavan's other commitments.

In August 2009, the film was launched again for the third time with a first schedule planned in Hyderabad and intentions of making the film with fifty days for a February 2010 release. Later that month, Selvaraghavan and G. V. Prakash Kumar went to Amsterdam to compose the music for the six songs in the film. However the film was yet again abandoned in October 2009 as Selvaraghavan left to complete Aayirathil Oruvan and begin another film with Vikram, which also failed to progress after its first schedule.

The film began shoots for the fourth time on 27 June 2010 with the same cast, but a changed title of Maruvan. Filming was held with the lead pair at Jeppiaar Engineering College in Chennai as the film began to progress quickly. The crew revealed that a difficult ten day schedule was completed in September 2010, with the team only sleeping four hours per night to complete it. The title later was changed to Irandam Ulagam and in a turn of events, Yuvan Shankar Raja replaced Prakash Kumar as music composer in the film, with the latter reporting it was only due to "money and time issues". In January 2011, the director revealed that "70 per cent" of the film was over and later that month, the rights of the film were purchased by UTV Motion Pictures. However, in a sensational turn, Prakash Kumar was assigned again as composer after Yuvan Shankar Raja and Selvaraghavan fell out over the choice of composer for Selvaraghavan's next film, Vishwaroopam.

The film ran into trouble yet again after lead actress Andrea Jeremiah pulled out of the film, citing differences with the director and was replaced by Richa Gangopadhyay, who had initially been signed to do another film with the director. Therefore scenes featuring Andrea were thus removed and Richa was reportedly shooting for the film in Kannur in May 2011.
