Peder Are Nøstvold Jensen (born 11 June 1975) is a Norwegian far-right Islamophobic blogger and conspiracy theorist who uses the pseudonym Fjordman. He has been active in the "counterjihad" movement, which argues that multiculturalism, particularly Muslim immigration, poses a threat to Western civilization. The Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik quoted him extensively in his manifesto. According to The Independent, Jensen "has written numerous screeds accusing Muslims of secretly planning to take over Europe." Among other things, he has argued that all Muslims should be deported from Europe and promoted the "Eurabia" conspiracy theory.

Early life, education and work

Peder Nøstvold Jensen grew up in Ålesund, in what he describes as a "Socialist Left-family", and was for a short period in his youth a member of Socialist Youth, the party's youth organisation. According to document.no, his father was a long-time activist in the Workers' Communist Party.

He studied Arabic at the University of Bergen and at American University in Cairo. According to himself, the turning point in Jensen's life came when he was a student in Cairo during the 9/11 attacks. According to Jensen, "Western media claimed no Arabs were happy about the attacks. This is not true. Some of my neighbors celebrated the event with a spontaneous cake party, and felt what had happened was great." After returning home, Jensen began writing commentaries to Norway's leading newspapers, but claims his controversial opinions were not published by the mainstream media. After having a number of articles rejected, he decided to start his own blog instead, using the alias "Fjordman".

Jensen was an observer for the Norwegian ministry of foreign affairs and part of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron from early 2002 until mid 2003.

According to Verdens Gang, Jensen also has a master's degree in culture and technology from the University of Oslo. His master thesis, published in 2004, had the title Blogging Iran – A Case Study of Iranian English Language Weblogs.

The first known public writings from from Jensen appear in Norwegian newspaper VG, and in regional paper Sunnmørsposten in 2000. In his first two known articles Jensen criticizes feminism, an topic he sometimes writes about later under the nicknames Norwegian Kafir and Fjordman.

Later he`s active as an online commenter with anti-islamic comments in various norwegian online papers, but stops posting as Jensen to blog as Fjordman, after a harsh comment from Anders Gjæver of newspaper VG.

The Fjordman writings

Fjordman blogged on his own web log in 2005, giving it up at the end of the year. Since then, he has "guested" in other blogs such as Brussels Journal, Gates of Vienna and Islam-watch.org. Fjordman published a compilation of his articles in print via lulu.com in November 2008. Ole Jørgen Anfindsen, writer and editor at Honestthinking.org, has said of Fjordman that "for six to seven years has been a phenomenon on the internet," and considers him "world famous in the sense that his articles have received millions of hits on the internet, and that thousands of people read him regularly." Fjordman himself estimates that he has published "between one and two million words" under the pseudonym Fjordman on the Internet, and notes that in addition to sensitive and controversial topics, he also writes about subjects ranging "from astrophysics to the history of chocolate and beer." He denies that he is an "extremist", and sees himself simply as having "a strong dedication to truth."

His articles are widely quoted in various blogs and right-wing sites critical of Islam, such as Global Politician, FrontPageMag, Jihad Watch, Brussels Journal, Faith Freedom International, Little Green Footballs, Free Republic and Daily Pundit among others, and quite often printed verbatim.

He has also been cited in books and articles as a representative of anti-Islamic viewpoints. He contributed an appendix to the 2010 book by Ole Jørgen Anfindsen, Selvmordsparadigmet – hvordan politisk korrekthet ødelegger samfunnet (lit. "The Suicide Paradigm – how political correctness destroys society").

The 2011 attacks

Shortly after the bombing of Oslo, Fjordman asked his regular readers at the Gates of Vienna blog to remember that Jens Stoltenberg, the Norwegian prime minister, was as much a "pathetic sucker for islam as it is humanly possible to be". When the shooting at Utøya became known a few hours later, Fjordman described the AUF youngsters under attack as a «gang of antiisraeli, propalestine youth-socialists».

Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused in the 2011 Norway attacks, frequently praised writings of Fjordman, citing him "extensively" in his manifesto and naming him as his favourite author with similar views.

In response to learning the identity of the terrorist, Fjordman strongly distanced himself from Breivik, whom he referred to as a "violent psychopath", and said he "intensely dislike" the fact that he was cited by Breivik. The police confiscated his PC and questioned him, saying they wanted to "investigate how might have influenced the charged man". In the weeks following the terrorist attacks, there was intense speculation regarding his identity, until he revealed his identity in a newspaper interview.

Views

Fjordman's topics include Islam and democracy, multiculturalism, the European Union and Western culture. He is an outspoken proponent of Bat Yeor's Eurabia theory and wrote an essay titled "The Eurabia Code" supporting it, in which he says that "he 'Jewish threat' in the 1930s was entirely fictional, whereas the 'Islamic threat' now is very real." his book compiling his articles is titled Defeating Eurabia. The Norwegian News Agency has stated that Fjordman " considered a very central far-right and anti-Islamic voice in Europe." Andrew Brown characterises him as " Islamophobe who has for years been predicting civil war between Muslims and their neighbours".

Fjordman was a major ideological inspiration of the massmurdered , and a few hours after the shooting of the peacefull children and youth from the moderate social democratic youth organization was known, he called them "a gang of anti-Israeli and pro-Palenistian youth-socialists". When disclosed as Anders Nøstvold Jensen Fjordman condemmed Breivik strongly in public

Fjordman believes that the Western governments promoting the influx of non-white immigrants are demonstrating "white masochism", and that white people have the right to maintain:

a place of our own where we can prosper, live in our own major cities without having to fear violence because of our race, and without being stripped of our heritage in order to placate people who moved to our countries of their own free will. We have the right to preserve our heritage and are under no obligation to commit collective suicide or serve as a dumping ground for other countries. It has nothing to do with animosity towards others.

He denies that this is a white supremacist view:

Guarding your identity is . . . a universal human trait, not a white trait. In fact, it is less pronounced among whites today than among anybody else. Only whites cling onto the idea of universalism, everybody else sticks with their own ethnic group. . . . It is not about white supremacy, . . . it is about equality. Whites are currently the only racial group specifically denied the opportunity to defend their countries and heritage. . . . The idea that every white person who desires self-determination and self-preservation is a racist, a white supremacist and a Nazi is nonsense and should flatly be rejected.

He argues that current policy is in fact tantamount to "reversed Nazism, since it is based on the assumption that whites should have fewer rights than others and can be colonized and ethnically cleansed with impunity".

Fjordman rejects accusations of racism:

I asked . . . whether it should be considered “racism” if native Swedes resist being turned into a minority in their own country, which they will become within a few decades if current levels of immigration continue.

According to him, "non-whites attacking whites" constitutes "the vast majority of racist violence in Western nations". He associates this with socialism. In his view, "he West did not win the Cold War. We haven't defeated Socialism," and "in Europe today, Marxists and Leftists of all kinds virtually control Western media and academia". The Western media treats Muslims who attack Western civilization with more lenience than whites who seek to defend themselves:

White critics of mass immigration are systematically demonized as racists, bigots, “right-wing extremists” or Fascists and Nazis. . . . Muslim groups who support terrorism and want to smash Western civilization are called moderates in Western media, yet we are labeled as extremists if we resist being turned into a minority in our own country.

Fjordman argues for the preservation of a native majority, including indigenous Europeans. In his 2007 essay "A European Declaration of Independence", he demands, among other things, an extremely restrictive immigration policy, the dissolution of the European Union and rejection of multiculturalism and says that otherwise, Europeans will have to conclude that the governments have given up on their people, and that the laws and taxes which they impose on them are therefore illegitimate.
