Nair Subcastes and Community

Nair is a Hindu Kshatriya caste found in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Nair caste has over 200 subcastes found in ruling royal caste, Kshatriya caste and Shudra caste. Government of India consider the Royal caste and Kshatriya caste as forward caste in General category and Shudra caste under Other Backward Community. The origin of Nair community is disputed; one theory believed to be formed from Aryan Jains and another theory suggest a legend from Parashurama that Nairs are formed by intermarinage between Brahmin and Kshatriya. The term Nair is believed to be derived from Nayaka means leader or from Nagas from Nagavanshi clan.
