Revision as of 04:26, 4 April 2006 by RichardF (talk | contribs) (→External links: cat)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)The state of Indiana numbers its highways rationally: in general, odd one-digit and two-digit highways are north-south highways, numbers increasing toward the west; even one-digit and two-digit highways are east-west highways, numbers increasing toward the south. Single-digit and two-digit US highways other than U.S. Route 35 are "secret" state highways of the same number (that is, US-52 is also "Indiana 52"). Three-digit US routes have "secret" Indiana state route numbers, usually with two-digit numbers.
Three-digit routes are related, as a rule, to the single-digit or two-digit parent US or State route; thus Indiana State Highway 205 is related to Indiana State Highway 5 and Indiana State Highway 120 is related to U.S. Route 20.
Exceptions to this system are "47" and "67", diagonal routes, the defunct "100" beltline around Indianapolis, Indiana State Highway 135, which acts like a two-digit state highway, and both Indiana State Highway 149 and Indiana State Highway 249, which are arterial between Indiana State Highway 49 and Indiana State Highway 51.
No state rule prevents the use of a number both as a state and as an Interstate route (Interstate 64 and Indiana State Highway 64 even meet)! However, this does break the federal rules.

Indiana State Highways 400-499
Indiana State Highway 403
SR 403 is a six mile northeast-to-southwest route that lies entirely within Clark County. It connects U.S. Highway 31 in Sellersburg with Indiana 3 in Charlestown.
Indiana State Highway 427
Indiana 427 is a short (14 miles), roughly northeast-southwest two-lane surface road between US 6 at Waterloo and the Ohio state line east of Hamilton, where it meets Ohio State Highway 34 into Edon, Ohio. It is a child of US 27 (now decommissioned north of Fort Wayne) lying entirely in De Kalb County.
Indiana State Highway 431
Indiana 431 is a busy route connecting US 31 with Interstate 465 at Exit 33. It passes through the Indianapolis subarb of Carmel. It allows traffic on US 31 north of Carmel a shorter route to I-465 and the eastside of Indianapolis.
A former southern portion of SR 431 extended south along Madison Avenue from the south side of Indianapolis through Greenwood.
Indiana State Highway 443
Indiana State Highway 445
Indiana 445 is a short, two mile connector route in eastern Greene Co. linking Indiana 54 with Indiana 45.
Indiana State Highway 446
A scenic route with good grade, Indiana 446 connects Indiana 46 on the east side of Bloomington with U.S. Highway 50 in eastern Lawrence Co.. It passes over a bridge over Lake Monroe and through the Hoosier National Forest.
Indiana State Highway 450
A winding route that terminates at both ends at its parent route, U.S. Highway 50, Indiana 450 connects the towns of Shoals with Bedford.
Indiana State Highway 458
A short, one mile route in Lawrence Co. connecting Indiana 158 with the Dark Hollow community west of Bedford.
Indiana State Highway 462
Indiana 462 is a short two mile spur route in southwestern Harrison County running from Indiana 62 to the Harrison-Crawford Wyandotte Complex.
Indiana State Highway 520
Indiana State Highway 520 is a four-lane connector about 1,000 feet (305 m) in length. It exists solely to connect U.S. Route 12 and U.S. Route 20 in Town of Pines, about 3 miles (5 km) west of Michigan City. U.S. 12 and U.S. 20 do not cross at this point — they parallel each other for another 22 miles (35 km) westbound and multiplex in Gary; U.S. 20 is generally considered the faster of the two, while U.S. 12 is the scenic Dunes Highway. Eastbound, U.S. 12 travels through Michigan City and northeast into Michigan where it becomes the Red Arrow Highway. U.S. 20 stays in Indiana and runs around Michigan City as a bypass to the south.
Indiana State Highway 526
SR526 is a short north-south highway connecting the Purdue University Airport with SR126 in West Lafayette. It is approximately the western boundary of the Purdue University campus. It is a child of and intersects with SR26.
Indiana State Highway 545
Indiana 545 is a discontinuous route consisting of a northern section and a southern section.
The northern section connects Indiana 56 with Indiana 164 in eastern Dubois County, passing the town of Dubois. This section of the highway is named for Indiana State Representative Dennis Heeke, who lobbied for the extension of the route from the town of Dubois south to Indiana 164.
The southern section connects Indiana 62 at the town of St. Meinrad to Indiana 66 at Troy. This section is very scenic, winding and narrow.
Indiana State Highway 550
Indiana 550 terminates at both ends at U.S. Highway 150 in Martin County between Loogootee and Lacy.
Indiana State Highway 662
Formerly a four-mile route that passed through Newburgh, Indiana 662 connected Indiana 66 east of Newburgh with Interstate 164. In recent years, however, the highway was decommissioned through Newburgh proper, and now has a routing of slightly more than a mile from I-164 to Ellerbusch Road on the west side of the town.
Indiana State Highway 727
SR 727 is a very short east-west Indiana state highway lying entirely within Steuben County, Indiana, connecting Pokagon State Park to Indiana State Highway 127 and hence Interstate 69. Termini are at the gate of Pokagon State Park and Indiana 127 at a rural intersection.
Until 1967 it was designated as Indiana State Highway 127 when Interestate 69 was completed in northermmost Indiana, and Indiana State Highway 727 referred to a short, now decommissioned highway in northeastern Indiana. Both incarnations of Indiana 727 are or were "child" routes of the old U.S. Highway 27 which has been decommissioned in favor of Interstate 69.
Indiana State Highway 827
SR 827 is a short, northeast-to-southwest highway connecting Fremont, northern terminus on SR 120, and Angola, Angola, southern terminus on SR 127 Very short, it lies entirely within Steuben County. It has been shortened at both ends; it used to reach the Michigan state line where it fed into Fremont Road in Branch County, Michigan, a county road that has never carried a numerical designation. In Angola it was diverted (2005) over a recently-completed (2004) viaduct that now diverts it from its old course within Angola
It is a "child" of the now-decommissioned US 27.
Indiana State Highway 912
Known along its entire length as Cline Avenue, SR 912 is a freeway north of the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 90), and a local access road serving Griffith south of the Indiana Toll Road. It is a "child" of U.S 12.
The freeway runs from Whiting east to Gary near the Gary/Chicago International Airport. This freeway is about 7 miles (11 km) long. This is the only State highway in Indiana whose majority is of interstate quality.
South of the Borman Expressway (Interstates 80/94 and U.S. 6), Cline Avenue becomes a 4-lane divided highway. Indiana 912 extends south 1 mile (1.6 km) to Ridge Road (Business U.S. 6).
Indiana State Highway 930
SR 930 is a short urban highway entirely within greater Fort Wayne, Indiana. It consists of a divided surface highway that used to be U.S. Highway 30 between Interstate 69 and Interstate 469; at both termini (on the northwest side of Fort Wayne and at New Haven, Indiana) it feeds to and from US 30, which has been diverted to Interstate 69 and Interstate 469 as a bypass of Fort Wayne.
Originally it was a north-side bypass of Fort Wayne; like many urban bypasses it eventually became a corridor for suburban or suburban-like development and became severely congested.
Indiana State Highway 933
SR 933 is an urban highway consisting of sections of a now-decommissioned U.S. Highway 33 to the north of the St. Joseph Valley Parkway (U.S. Highway 20). It takes a north-south course from the Michigan state line, continuing Michigan State Highway 51 from Niles, Michigan, to downtown South Bend where it takes an abrupt east-west course through Mishawaka, ending at the St. Joseph/Elkhart county line. The road continues in Elkhart County as Old U.S. 33.
All of it is surface highway, and the east-west segment from South Bend to its southeastern terminus is part of the first route of the Lincoln Highway in Indiana.
