Sidhbari is a small town, situated in the foothills of Dhauladhar mountains, in Kangra district of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India.
Overview
Sidhbari derives its name from a sage, Baba Sidh. It is believed by the locals that the dhuni (burning piece of wood) here has been burning for centuries and has never been extinguished even once. Hence the vibhuti (ash) is said to have the sacred blessings of the Sidh Baba.
Since 2000, Sidhbari has gained renown as the temporary residence of the Karmapa (Ogyen Trinley Dorje).
Attractions
The small town of Sidhbari is bustling with activity due to several local attractions.
- Very near to the village is Chinmaya Ashram or Sandeepany Himalayas. In this Ashram is the Samadhi (resting place) of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, founder of Chinmaya Mission.
- Sidhbari is also the temporary residence of the Karmapa (Ogyen Trinley Dorje), at Gyuto Monastery. Sidhbari is about six kilometers from Dharamshala, and about 15 kilometers from McLeodGanj, where the 14th Dalai Lama lives.
- One attraction for tourists in Sidhbari is the Naam Art Gallery, exhibiting paintings by European artists Elsbeth Buschmann and Alfred W. Hallett.
Naam Art Gallery
Naam Art Gallery is a popular tourist spot situated in Dharamsala city. There are various paintings and exhibitions on display in this art gallery. These paintings are works of the renowned German painter Elsbeth Buschmann and English painter A.W. Hallett. It is situated in Sidhbari village, which is on the Dharamshala-Chamunda Road.
The exhibition in ‘NAAM ART GALLERY’ exhibits paintings by Elsbeth Buschmann - watercolours and acrylics - and oil paintings by Alfred W. Hallett. Elsbeth Buschmann, is a professional painter from Germany, having studied painting in London and Paris . She lived in many countries where she held exhibitions, especially in the USA where she received various awards. Her paintings are in private collections in Germany, USA, Scotland, India and Switzerland. In India she held solo exhibitions at AIFAX, New Delhi and TAG, the Art Gallery of the Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai. She also took part in ‘The Himalayan National Exhibition of Art’ and was awarded. Elsbeth Buschmann was born in Limburg/Lahn, Germany. After finishing school she went to study arts in London and Paris. Her subsequent extensive Study trips took her to Scotland and Switzerland.Her early style of traditional painting in oil and water colours changed after a stay in Mexico where she was impressed by its contemporary art. Back in her country she spontaneously developed her present style which gives her the freedom to express her inner self. During her three years’ stay in the U.S. she participated in art shows and received various prices. Two solo exhibitions in Limburg Lahn and Cologne, Germany followed. In 1987 she adopted a spiritual path and settled down in India, north of Dharamsala in the Himalayan mountains in order to paint and meditate in solitude to pursue her search for truth and to find out what is hidden behind the appearances. As she says: “ Nothing is as it appears. ”Her inspiring meditations form the background of her work and reflect a harmonious spiritual symbioses. In 1995 she held a Solo Exhibition at the AIFAX Galleries, New Delhi
- Another attraction is the earthen architectural works of Didi Contractor, including several homes made of adobe and bamboo.
