Its other historical names include Ардаган (Ardagan) in Russian (Russian language has a tendency to switch the "h" or "kh" sounds to "g" as in gadflies) and Արդահան in Armenian. With a population of 17,274 (2000 census) it is the smallest provincial capital in Turkey. The city is renowned for its kashar cheese and its castle, and the surrounding region for its ski resorts and other medieval castles.
