Revision as of 13:15, 29 December 2002 by Gabbe (talk | contribs) (Genoam -> Genoan)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)The Americas are the two continents located between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, namely North America and South America. Central America is often called that, as if it were a separate entity, but technically it is a part of North America. The Americas are often also described collectively as the Western Hemisphere or the New World.
The name America is generally believed to be derived from that of Amerigo Vespucci, a Genoan cartographer, but recent research suggests that in fact it may be derived from Richard Amerike a merchant from Bristol, England.
