In feudal Japan, a ronin (浪人) was a masterless or unemployed samurai. One of the most famous ronin was Miyamoto Musashi.

The Seven Samurai features ronin.

A ronin, a Japanese for those who failed the college entrance exam. The term is probably from the analogy that they have no school to attend as samurai has no leader to serve.
