One of the most famous ronin was Miyamoto Musashi. They may be hired as yojimbo.
In most of ages, ronins tend to be a target of humiliation, satire. That is partly because they are considered to avoid commiting seppuku in the time they lost their leaders and stand their shame afterwise.
The Seven Samurai features ronin.
A ronin, a Japanese for those who failed the college entrance exam. The term is probably from the analogy that they have no school to attend as samurai has no leader to serve.
