Prism is the upcoming fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry, to be released on October 22, 2013 through Capitol Records. Its lead single, "Rainbow" is set to be released in August 2013.
Background
In April 2012, Perry stated that the album's sound will be really dark.. In late 2012, Carey spoke to Billboard about the album, stating: "What I'm not going to do is hurry up to fail, to shoot myself in the foot. I need to live so I have something worth singing about. That's always been the case for me". She added: "..... I know exactly the record I want to make next. I know the artwork, the coloring and the tone, but I'm not in the studio yet. So it's a little like painting the baby's room blue before knowing it's actually a boy. I have to let the music take shape first. I even know what type of tour I'm doing next. I'll be very pleased if the vision I have in my head becomes a reality. But I have to honor the music. I won't try and duplicate what I did last time. That would be silly. It's not of any interest for me to try and outdo myself at every corner. Eventually you just like pop, explode. It's like a Jenga game. How tall can you get before you just fall the fuck over?. I am doing little things here and there. I was just in the studio with another artist and it turned out all right. I'm going to start dusting off the wheels just a little: going in with a couple of people in November and try out fun collaborations that maybe people wouldn't imagine". When asked if she would make a duet with best friend Rihanna, Perry replied: "There's a lot of talk around that type of thing for me and her. It couldn't be just like whatever. It has to be great because she and I don't really like to lose".
In April 2013, Perry stated that she is halfway done with the album. She stated: "When I put myself on a timeline, when I tell the record company when I want to release the album, that’s when the race starts, that’s when I put pressure on myself.” Among the people that Perry worked with are Sia, Bonnie Mckee, ,Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells, Perry stated that Wells “allows me to vomit words. Not that I can’t find that with other but he just lets me. Max and Luke push me the most. As a team we have certain strengths. With Max, it’s melody choices, Luke is production and I’m topline and melody". Perry added that working with McKee "is like an emotional abuse session, Bonnie and I argue (like) we’re in the ring fighting for the best lyric. We presented ‘Teenage Dream’ three times (before it was recorded)". Perry stated that she went in with a melody and verse to work with Greg Kurstin and McKee: "She came in from a yoga class and said, 'I want to write a song called 'Double Rainbow. So we have a song called ‘Double Rainbow".. In June 2013, Perry revealed that there is a song on the album titled "Bad Photographs"; Perry stated that she named it 'Bad Photographs’ "because the idea is that when people are in a relationship they only take photographs when they are happy, and sometimes when it ends you realize maybe it would be important to take photographs when it’s not happy. So I have this idea—”.. In early July 2013, Mckee talked about the album, stating: "We were just in Santa Barbara and we wrote three or four songs, I guess. So I have four songs with her coming out". I think it's a little bit more grown up and it's really interesting," McKee said. "I'm really excited for the world to hear it because she's just... she's taking a new approach. And I don't want to say too much about it, but it's definitely different. It's definitely a little more mature than the 'California Gurls' of yesterday".
Album title, Release, and Promotion
On July 29, 2013, fans couldn't believe their eyes when they saw a massive gold-plated truck drive through the streets of an area in Los Angeles with large black writing emblazoned on the side which read: “Katy Perry. Prism. 10.22.13”, revealing the album's title and release date. The truck will reportedly be making stops at several cities across the US. Perry tweeted: "Find the #PRISM semi, take a picture and I'll RT you. Don't worry, Los Angeles is just the first stop on the map".
