Saqifah - Also Known as "Saqifa Bani Saeda" where the usurpers gathered on the day of the Death of the Prophet Mohammed (AS)to appoint Abu Bakr as the Caliph of the Prophet, even though the Prophet had already designated Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor. The events of this day led to deep schisms in Islam and is widely believed to be the core reason for all the problems Islam has faced since then, including the tragic death of Husain ibn Ali, the Prophet Mohammed's grandson.

(Note that this is the version of history accepted by Shi'ite Muslims. The Sunni Muslim version of history denies that 'Ali was appointed by Mohammed as his successor, and holds that Abu Bakr was legitimately chosen by the Muslim community following Mohammed's death; also, the Sunni version would assign more complex causes to Islam's problems.)
