A Martial Race' is a term used by Lord Clyve in his book Historical Essays.He divided the entire Indian ethnic groups into two categories Martial and Non Martial.Martial races were thought to possess qualities like courage, loyalty, self-sufficiency, physical strength and resilience, orderliness and hard work, and fighting tenacity. The British recruited heavily from these Martial Races for service in the colonial military. Some of the peoples designated by the British as belonging to a martial race are the Gurkhas, Rajputs , Jats, (Muslim, Sikh & Hindu) Pashtuns (Pathans), Marathas, Mahars, and Kodavas.Bengalis were called non-martial with many derogatory remarks about their ethnicity and history,however they soon became major source of resistance to British Raj.
