  • Checking for open proxies: see Materialscientist here. To test if I can get in: preferences -> advanced -> proxies, set the IP in question and port 80 or 81. To become myself again, return to "Direct connection to the internet".
Or, simpler, use this tool: http://www.ip-adress.com/Proxy_Checker/. Enter an IP followed by a colon and the port you want to test.
For more ports to test, see hidemyass.com.

Discretionary sanctions

I'm still trying to figure out why there's one list of ArbCom general sanctions at Misplaced Pages:General sanctions#Imposed by the committee and a totally different list of Arbcom discretionary sanctions at Misplaced Pages:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions#Areas of conflict. Before I die I may understand the difference between General and Discretionary sanctions. (They both seem to be discretionary, for sure.) List of community general sanctions are here.

Use {{subst:Ds/alert|topic=topic}} for alerts from May 2014, as per Pseudoscience and India, Pakistan and Afghanistan below. (It's not much use trying to guess what word for the topic one is supposed to use to make the templates work. Thus, {{subst:Ds/alert|topic=pseudoscience}} won't work, haha, sucks to me. I hate nerds.) These alerts expire after one year.

Use {{subst:Ds/sanction|topic=topic}} for sanctions from May 2014. But these templates are liable to be wrong (old versions) in lists on WP pages. :-(

  • Pseudoscience:

{{subst:Ds/alert|topic=ps}} expands to:

Please carefully read this information:

The Arbitration Committee has authorised discretionary sanctions to be used for pages regarding pseudoscience and fringe science, a topic which you have edited. The Committee's decision is here.

Discretionary sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimize disruption to controversial topics. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to the topic that do not adhere to the purpose of Misplaced Pages, our standards of behavior, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. This message is to notify you sanctions are authorised for the topic you are editing. Before continuing to edit this topic, please familiarise yourself with the discretionary sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.

This message is informational only and does not imply misconduct regarding your contributions to date.

  • Community sanctions for caste articles:
  • Warning: {{subst:Uw-castewarning}} expands to:
The Misplaced Pages community has permitted administrators to impose discretionary sanctions on any editor who is active on any page about social groups, explicitly including caste associations and political parties, related to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. Discretionary sanctions can be used against an editor who repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Misplaced Pages, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process. If you engage in further inappropriate behavior in this area, you may be placed under sanctions, which can include blocks, a revert limitation, or an article ban. The discussion leading to the imposition of these sanctions can be read here.

Please familiarise yourself with the information page at Misplaced Pages:General sanctions/South Asian social groups.

  • My own much-patched final version of a template for a discretionary topic ban on caste articles, per community general sanctions, is here. Actual — new! — sanction template for caste articles is {{subst:uw-castesanction|insert description of misconduct here|insert description of sanction here}}. For example, {{subst:uw-castesanction| persistent disruptive editing at ]|you have been indefinitely banned from making any edits to caste-related pages}} expands to

For persistent disruptive editing at Talk:Raju, I have decided, in my capacity as an uninvolved administrator under the terms of this community's discussion, to impose the following sanction on you:

you have been indefinitely banned from making any edits to caste-related pages

This sanction has been logged at Misplaced Pages:General sanctions/South Asian social groups. If the sanction includes a ban, please read the banning policy to ensure you understand what this means. If you do not comply with this sanction, you may be blocked for an extended period, by way of enforcement of this sanction—and you may also be made subject to further sanctions.

You may appeal this sanction to the community at the administrators' noticeboard and to the Arbitration Committee. You may also appeal directly to me on my talk page, before or instead of appealing to the noticeboard. Even if you appeal this sanction, you remain bound by it until you are notified by an uninvolved administrator that the appeal has been successful. You are also free to contact me on my talk page if anything of the above is unclear to you. Bishonen | talk 09:27, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

COI edit notice

{{COI editnotice}} for company page talkpages, expands to:

Individuals acting on behalf of this organization are strongly advised not to edit the article. Click here to request corrections or suggest content, or contact us if the issue is urgent.

Use edit summaries

{{subst:uw-editsummary}} which renders as

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Misplaced Pages. Please make sure to include an edit summary with every edit. Please provide one before saving your changes to an article, as the summaries are quite helpful to people browsing an article's history.

The edit summary appears in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks!

NPOV

{{Uw-npov2}} expands to

Information icon Please do not add commentary or your own personal analysis to Misplaced Pages articles. Doing so violates Misplaced Pages's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you.

Don't change the English variety:

{{subst:uw-lang}}, which reads:
In a recent edit, you changed one or more words from one national variety of English to another. Because Misplaced Pages has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Misplaced Pages articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Misplaced Pages articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you.

Vandalism warning:

First vandalism warning:

Old version, must be copypasted:

Welcome to Misplaced Pages. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Misplaced Pages, at least one of your recent edits did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Upgraded yucky milquetoast version:

{{subst:uw-vandalism}}, which reads:

Hello, I'm Bishonen. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions because it didn't appear constructive. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks!

(Isn't that special?)

Second vandalism warning:
{{subst:uw-vandalism2}}, which reads:
Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Misplaced Pages. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted or removed. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.

Stern vandalism warning:
{{subst:uw-vandalism3}}, which reads:
Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Misplaced Pages, you may be blocked from editing.

First and only vandalism warning:
{{subst:uw-vandalism4im}}, which reads:
This is the only warning you will receive regarding your disruptive edits. If you vandalize Misplaced Pages again, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.

First content blanking warning:
{{subst:uw-delete1}}, which reads:
Welcome to Misplaced Pages. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from Misplaced Pages. When removing content, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the content has been restored, as you can see from the page history. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.

Spammy external links:

Level 1: {{Subst:uw-spam1}}, which reads:
Information icon Hello, I'm Bishonen. I wanted to let you know that I removed an external link you added, because it seemed to be inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page, or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you.

Level 2: {{Subst:uw-spam2}}, which reads:

Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Misplaced Pages. Misplaced Pages is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guidelineand spam guideline for further explanations. Because Misplaced Pages uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you.

Level 3: {{Subst:uw-spam3}}, which reads:
Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Misplaced Pages. It is considered spamming and Misplaced Pages is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Misplaced Pages usesnofollow tags, additions of links to Misplaced Pages will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Misplaced Pages.

Level 4: {{Subst:uw-spam4}}, which reads:
Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you insert a spam link. Persistent spammers may have their websites blacklisted, preventing anyone from linking to them from all Wikimedia sites as well as potentially being penalized by search engines.

Level 4im: {{Subst:uw-spam4im}}, which reads:
Stop icon This is your only warning; if you insert a spam link to Misplaced Pages again, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Persistent spammers may have their websites blacklisted, preventing anyone from linking to them from all Wikimedia sites as well as potentially being penalized by search engines.

First and only npa warning:

{{subst:uw-npa4im}}, which reads:

This is the only warning you will receive regarding your disruptive comments.
The next time you make a personal attack, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Comment on content, not on other contributors or people.

Edit warring:

Nice friendly first editwarring warning: {{subst:uw-ewsoft}}, which reads:

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Misplaced Pages. You appear to be engaged in an edit war with one or more editors. Although repeatedly reverting or undoing another editor's contributions may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Misplaced Pages this is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, and often creates animosity between editors. Instead of edit warring, please try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. While edit warring on Misplaced Pages is not acceptable in any amount, breaking the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block. Thank you.

{{subst:uw-ew}}, which reads:

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Misplaced Pages's policy on edit warring states:
  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing.

{{subst:uw-3rr}}, which reads

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others and avoid editing disruptively.

In particular, the three-revert rule states that:

  1. Making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period is almost always grounds for an immediate block.
If you continue to edit war, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.

It's probably better to add the article name as a parameter, which improves the text altogether. Like this:

{{subst:uw-3rr|Buckingham Palace}}, which displays as:

Your recent editing history at Buckingham Palace shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.

To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Fringe warning

  • {{subst:Uw-fringe1}}, which displays as:

Information icon Welcome to Misplaced Pages. I notice that you added some content to a Misplaced Pages article that appears to be a minority or fringe viewpoint. Unfortunately, this edit appears to give undue weight to this minority viewpoint, and has been reverted. To maintain a neutral point of view, an idea that is not broadly supported by scholarship in its field must not be given undue weight in an article about a mainstream idea. Feel free to use the article's talk page to discuss this, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Or add article and additional text as parameters like this:

{{subst:Uw-fringe1|''article''|''additional text''}}, which displays as:

Information icon Welcome to Misplaced Pages. I notice that you added some content to article that appears to be a minority or fringe viewpoint. Unfortunately, this edit appears to give undue weight to this minority viewpoint, and has been reverted. To maintain a neutral point of view, an idea that is not broadly supported by scholarship in its field must not be given undue weight in an article about a mainstream idea. No legal threats

  • {{subst:uw-legal}}, which displays as:

Stop icon Your recent edits could give Misplaced Pages contributors the impression that you may consider legal or other "off-wiki" action against them, or against Misplaced Pages itself. Please note that making such threats on Misplaced Pages is strictly prohibited under Misplaced Pages's policies on legal threats and civility. Users who make such threats may be blocked. If you have a dispute with the content of any page on Misplaced Pages, please follow the proper channels for dispute resolution. Please be sure to comment on content, not contributors, and where possible make specific suggestions for changes supported by reliable independent sources and focusing especially on verifiable errors of fact. Thank you.

  • {{subst:uw-legal|Article}} references a specific article
  • {{subst:uw-legal|Article|Additional text}} adds text onto the end of the message instead of "Thank you"

Don't mark that "minor"

{{subst:Uw-minor|Article|Additional text}}, which displays as:

Information icon Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits, such as your recent edits to Article, as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Additional text

Unsourced

  • {{subst:uw-unsourced1}}, which displays as

Information icon Hello, I'm Bishonen. I noticed that you made a change to an article, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you.

  • {{subst:uw-unsourced2}}, which displays as

Information icon Please do not add or change content without verifying it by citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Misplaced Pages:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you.

Please sign your comments

{{subst:sign}} displays as
Information icon Hello and welcome to Misplaced Pages. When you add content to talk pages and Misplaced Pages pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you.

Don't abuse warning templates

{{Subst:Uw-tempabuse2}} displays as
Information icon Please refrain from abusing warning or blocking templates. Doing so is a violation of Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Please use the user warnings sandbox for any tests you may want to do, or take a look at our introduction page to learn more about contributing to the encyclopedia. Thank you.

Block messages

  • To insert duration of block and an individualised reason, use this: {{subst:uw-block |time=duration |reason=reason}}
  • This text can be added to the end of any block message: If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

(Get that from the edit window, as the ~~~~ needs to be coded, or it'll just say Bishonen again.)

  • This block contains much useful stuff to plagiarize re persistent tendentious editing.

  • With parameters: {{subst:uw-block |time=duration |reason=reason}}. It reads for example:
    Stop icon with clock
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 6 months for persistent disruptive editing. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}. However, you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

  • {{subst:uw-blockindef |reason=being a vandalism-only account}}, which reads:
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for being a vandalism-only account. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.
  • {{subst:uw-vaublock}} which reads:

Your account has been blocked indefinitely because it has become apparent that it is being used only for vandalism. Furthermore, your username is a blatant violation of our username policy, meaning that it is profane; threatens, attacks or impersonates another person; or suggests that your intention is not to contribute to the encyclopedia (see our blocking and username policies for more information).

We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia, but users are not allowed to edit with inappropriate usernames, nor is trolling or other disruptive behavior ever tolerated. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} on your user talk page, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Template:Z13Template:Z18

  • {{subst:uw-ewblock|time=duration}}, which reads for example:
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours for edit warring. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.

  • {{subst:Uw-sblock|anon=yes|time=Duration|reason=For a different reason|notalk=yes|page=Targeted page|sig=yes}}, which reads for example
You are using this template in the wrong namespace. Use this template on a user talk page instead.
  • {{subst:sockBlock}}, which displays as
This account has been blocked indefinitely as a sock puppet that was created to violate Misplaced Pages policy. Note that multiple accounts are allowed, but using them for illegitimate reasons is not. If this account is not a sock puppet, and you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here ~~~~}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Userpage tags for socks

  • {{blockedsockpuppet|username}} displays as
Multi-user iconThis account has been confirmed by a CheckUser as a sockpuppet of Username (talk · contribs · logs), and has been blocked indefinitely.
Please refer to contributions for evidence.
Account information: block logcontribslogsabuse logCentralAuth
A CheckUser has confirmed that this account is a sockpuppet
"Category:Misplaced Pages sockpuppets of username" does not exist.
Please use this link to create the category page
(The page will be pre-loaded. All you need to do is save it)
  • {{sock|puppeteername|confirmed}} displays as
Multi-user iconThis account has been confirmed by a CheckUser as a sockpuppet of Puppeteername (talk · contribs · logs), and has been blocked indefinitely.
Please refer to editing habits or contributions of the sockpuppet for evidence. This policy subsection may be helpful.
Account information: block logcontribslogsabuse logCentralAuth
A CheckUser has confirmed that this account is a sockpuppet
"Category:Misplaced Pages sockpuppets of puppeteername" does not exist.
Please use this link to create the category page
(The page will be pre-loaded. All you need to do is save it)

For puppeteer:

  • {{sockpuppeteer|blocked}} displays as
This account has been blocked indefinitely because its owner is suspected of abusively using multiple accounts.

(Account information: block log · CentralAuth · suspected sockpuppets · confirmed sockpuppets)

  • {{sockpuppeteer|blocked| checked=yes}} displays the same:
This account has been blocked indefinitely because CheckUser evidence confirms that the account's owner has abusively used multiple accounts.

(Account information: block log · CentralAuth · suspected sockpuppets · confirmed sockpuppets)

Protection padlocks:

Use {{pp-protected|small=yes}} for just an icon at the top.

Reason for protecting and/or duration can be added as parameters, which will show on mouseover. Like this: {{pp-vandalism|expiry=17 August 2013|small=yes}} But the reason parameter is fussy, I don't know anything that works except "vandalism" and "blp". {{pp-semi-blp|expiry=11 July 2013|small=yes}} will show as "This article is semiprotected until blabla to promote compliance with the policy on biographies of living people."

The lock icon will choose automagically between semi, full, and pending changes padlock (silver, gold, and green) according to what protection is in place.

Must start with protecting, because these templates will not be visible on pages that are not protected.
