It is now mostly obsolete. The UUCP package consists of several programs including uucp, uuencode, uudecode, uustat, and uuname.

Usenet traffic was originally carried over the UUCPNET. Addresses on UUCPNET are separated by exclamation marks, or bangs, hence the term bang path.
