The city, which hosts a population of 400,000, is located at the southern tip of Malay Peninsula, across the Causeway (Singapore-Johor Bahru) across the Straits of Johor from Singapore, and is a major transport hub for the region.
The city itself has several shopping centres. These include the City Square, Holiday Plaza, Pelangi, Leisure Mall, Lot 1, Best World Plaza, Tun Abdul Razak Complex and Komtar. However, due to the poor locality, many of them became bankrupt.
