The Etard's Reaction is a commonly used chemical reaction. It involves direct oxidation of an aromatic or heterocyclic bound methyl group to an aldehyde. The reaction uses chromyl chloride or other similar metallic oxides. For example:

C6H5CH3 + CrO2Cl2 → C6H5CH(OCrCl2OH)2

C6H5CH(OCrCl2OH)2 + H2O → C6H5CHO
