Sir Humphrey Gilbert the exponent of opening up the North west Passage lived here. He imported a black substance from Newfoundland to his laboratory in Limehouse in the hope he could transmute it into gold. After his alchemical experiements proved fruitless he returned to Newfoundland only to be swallowed up by a sea monster. Saint Ann's church, Limehouse was built by Nicholas Hawksmoor. A pyramid originally planned to be put atop the tower now stand in the graveyard. The church is next door to Limehouse Town Hall, home of the Spacejackers. Across the orad is the Sailors' Mission, where the Situationist International held its conference in 1960. The building subsequently became a run down hostel for the homeless which became notorious for its squalor.
