ISWAP - Boko Haram
Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province are connected and aren't enemies, however they are not the same organization. Since 2016, thousands of Boko Haram members decided to be loyal to the Islamic State and formed their own organization, the ISWAP. Thousands more militants remained loyal only to Abubakar Shekau, the Boko Haram's leader. I think that they should be separated with two articles, as several recent attacks carried out by the Islamic State are reported as executed by Boko Haram militants. I think you should create and new article for ISWAP.--Garmin21 (talk) 23:52, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Currently, the article is confusing and misleading to the reader as there are two groups mentioned.
Based on this comment, I am proposing to split split the article in two:
Boko Haram, led by Abu Bakr Shekau, and the Islamic State West Africa Province (Wilayat Garb Ifriqiyah), which is part of the Islamic State. Both split in August 2016.
See the French Misplaced Pages article. --Fontaine347 (talk) 22:34, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
I would personally say that ISWAP and Boko Haram are more or less one in the same thing. Due to two reasons:
1) The current leader of Boko Haram, Abu Bakr Shekau, has pledged allegiance to IS and has never rescinded doing so. Nor has Abu Musab al-Barnawi or Abu Abdullah Idris ibn Umar al-Barnawi. So is the leadership of BH and ISWAP the same or are they both the same organisation but with two names due to the fact BH started not being part of IS?
2)IS's Amaq news agency still releases images and videos of events in Nigeria. Showing militants hoisting up IS flags as seen on telegram and in this report from mid Jan:
I understand there has been a split amongst militants but I would argue the overwhelming majority of Boko Haram has stayed with the ISWAP title under Abu Bakr Shekau. Whatever split occurred, seems to be largely insignificant. As for them (Abu Bakr's group) the most logical thing to do is to remain with IS, considering IS's wealth and reputation. Plus according to the sources I read from Critial Threats, and the reports from the Israeli Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Centre, most events are committed by 'IS militants'. So if they are two separate organisations, then ISWAP seems to be the biggest Jihadist group now and not BH. But I assume they're the same thing due to the fact that BH leader Abu Bakr Shekau pledged allegiance to IS and hasn't rescinded doing so. Thats just my thoughts on the matter.
