Diaper fetishism is a paraphilia in which a person feels a strong desire to wear or use diapers without physiological necessity. It is differentiated from infantilism in that those of the latter category are also focused with returning to babyhood in ways other than by wearing diapers. The popular term for diaper fetishists is "diaper lover."

Contrast to infantilism

The Diaper lover (or DL for short) community is often associated with the Adult Baby (AB) community. However, the two are not identical, as the majority of diaper lovers do not engage in any kind of babyish activities and only solely are interested in diapers. About four in ten diaper lovers also consider themselves adult babies, so they are collectively known as AB/DLs. The majority of both diaper lovers and infantilists are heterosexual males. These desires are not related to pedophilia or infantophilia in any way. Inside the AB/DL communities, a sharp distinction is observed. Many of these communities will expel child molesters.

Aspects of the Fetish

Diaper usage

Many AB/DLs like to "wet" or urinate diapers, and a smaller number like to "mess" or defecate in them. Others do not because they find such practices disgusting, do not enjoy it, do not want to go through the cleanup afterward, or wouldn't be able to without being obvious. Some AB/DLs have difficulty wetting their diapers when they want to, as the result of overtrained bladders or paruresis.

A common compromise between wanting to wear diapers and needing to go about daily life is to wear diapers under normal clothing. When diaper lovers do so, it is in their everyday mindset, as opposed to an infantile one. A few adult babies wear diapers all the time, and may seek to develop enuresis or urinary incontinence. The level of enjoyment in wearing diapers all the time is mixed, and it may have lasting effects; some adult babies have found that the enjoyment diminishes rapidly when the need to wear diapers is always present. Other AB/DLs enjoy wearing diapers intermittently more than they would enjoy wearing them all the time.

Psychology

A classical Freudian analysis of diaper fetishism points in textbook fashion to a fixation in the anal stage of development, specifically an anal expulsive personality. According to Freud, such a fixation might stem from a parent attempting to begin toilet training before the child feels that they are ready, or from parents being excessively lax until schools begin to require the child to be fully trained. The sudden insistence of parents caught in this situation that the child must use the toilet could cause a traumatizing sense of rushed urgency, and a subconscious need to return to that stage to develop naturally. The fact that what few psychological studies have been done on the subject point to these desires first being experienced as a young child, abandoned during latency, and returned to it some time during puberty supports this position.
