Leads in Sports articles
All terms such as "the greatest" or "the greatest in the world" have already been long since removed from other sports articles such as tennis, where there was extensive discussion about this issue a few years ago. It was determined that the term was essentially without any defined meaning and was simply a "puff" term and should not appear in the lead. For example, in the Djokovic article, the term "most successful" is used. Further, you are suggesting that footnotes be used in the lead to support this? That is another issue of contention. If the statements are supported by references in the body of the article, it is not necessary to use them in the lead.
