Jumarts were once widely believed by Europeans to actually exist, and many people claimed to own or have encountered the animals. While they were discussed extensively in early scientific writings, such hybridization is now known to be biologically impossible. The term is of French origin and most historical writings about supposed jumarts were in the French language.
