Kathleen Ann Shea, age 6 has been missing since March 18, 1963. She was last seen in her hometown of Tyrone, Pennsylvania when she left her home on 14th Street. At approximately 12:10 p.m., Her father, James Shea, who came home for lunch from the mill, just up the street, kissed her goodbye and she headed for class; she refused a ride to school. Kathy was never seen in her afternoon Kindergarten class at Adams Elementary School, a mere four blocks away. Witnesses stated that she was about a block and a half away from the school when she disappeared. She was seen by the crossing guard at 16th Street, who remarked that she would be late for school, if she kept taking time to enjoy the fresh air.

Kathy, as she was known to her friends, had been out of school for several weeks due to illness. She had had her tonsils removed and while recovering she had caught chicken pox. Her teacher, Judy Ferrari, given her recent absence due to illness, assumed Kathy was still sick and did not alert Kathleen’s family of her absence. When the little girl did not come home, her mother, Mary Alice Shea, called several people, including the kindergarten teacher. A search of the school's classrooms and closets revealed no left-behind backpack, lunch box, pencil, or any other item the six-year-old may have been carrying on her walk to school. The Tyrone Police were contacted, and a search began in earnest.

The initial search lasted for 11 days; it was the biggest in Tyrone’s history. More than 3,000 people, putting in more than 75,000 man-hours, volunteered to join search teams made up of police, firefighters, Civil Defense personnel, the National Guard, and a Boy Scout troop. They worked tirelessly, searching the entire town but no trace of Kathy could be found. Bloodhounds were able to pick up a trail that was lost, only about 100 yards away from Adams Elementary. The assumption was made that she got into a car. Eventually, the Tyrone Police Department contacted the FBI for an abduction with the child taken out of the town. Even though theories and rumors circulated, with no evidence to pursue, no perpetrator was ever identified.

In the aftermath, the Shea family still had two young sons to raise. Later they adopted a foster child the took in after Kathy's disappearance. Eventually Mary Alice and Jim Shea separated in 1981, but they remained close. In 1997, Mary Alice died in 1981 at the age of 72 and Jim in 2006 at the age of 81.
