John Lindsay Robert Guest's path of descent from John Kidd Guest (1821-187) and Matilda Connolly (1835-1884)

Matilda and John Kidd Guest had four surviving children, William Langford Guest II (1860-1922); Jack (John) Henry Guest (1862-1922); Archibald "Archie" Guest (1866-1932) and Louisa Guest (1868-1941). All three sons played for the North Melbourne/Hotham Football Club (NMFC) in the VFA competition. William, an accountant with Andrew Kerr and Co. Pty. Ltd, Timber Merchants of Franklin Street, Melbourne, played senior and reserves between the years 1776-1885 . In 1884 he was NMFC's treasurer . In 1886 and 1887 he coached the club to its first premiership in the VFA second twenty competion . From 1888 to 1890 he was a VFA goal umpire . Unfortanetly William and wife Bridget Guest, nee Costello's legacy became extinct in 1963.

Jack (John) Henry Guest (1862-1922) became the Secretary of the North Melbourne/Hotham Cricket Club in its merger year with the NMFC, 1882/3 . The genealogical legacy left by Jack (John) Henry Guest 1862-1922 and wife Annie Caroline Guest (1868-1922), nee Allison a member of the Allison funeral dynasty family in Australia and Camberwell, London, England , is robust and well captured in John L.R. Guest's 2024, Guest Family History, Paternal Trace (Volume 1).

Archie, the youngest played first in NMFC's third senior team, Courtney United in 1884 as a 18 year old . He played in the second twenty team in 1885 and 1886 before crossing over for work reasons to play with Williamstown Football Club, also in the VFA. There he played no fewer than 17 games for the senior team between 1887 , 1888 and 1890 .

John L.R. Guest (1960-), the subject of this artcle is one of Archie's grandsons and was born on the 2nd December 1960, also raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. John is the eldest son of Jack Guest (1921-1987). Jack followed in his father Archie's footsteps and that of his uncles playing reserve grade football for the Carlton Football Club in 1936 and crossing to Fitzroy to also play reserve games as a schoolboy . A family tragedy in 1940 and then World War II intervened when Jack signed up as an under age volunteer, subsequently ending his probale VFL senior football career.

Validation of the Guest family history

Since 2018, John L.R. Guest has been actively engaged with the College of Arms and recently the College validated the Guest family's heritage , resulting in him researching and authoring three Guest Family Heritage Books, Volume 1, 2 and 3 . These books contain the families comprehensive set of genealogical and biographical records the College of Arms required to validate John L.R. Guest, and that of his family members bloodlines to Reverend Robert Hallifax 1761-1838, MA, Magdalen College, Oxford . It is this Robert Hallifax who is Guest's 5th maternal great grandfather and the most recent of Guest's matrilineal ancestors listed within the College of Arms, Hallifax Registered Pedigree, transcript, "MS 7D14/45", 16th December 1788.

The three volumes which constitute his original work are now preserved by the State Library of Victoria (SLV) in Melbourne ; State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) in Perth ; and the College of Arms and the Royal Library and Royal Archives in London, UK . Private reading sessions are available by booking with the SLV and SLWA:

  • Guest Family History - Paternal Trace, Volume I.
  • Guest Family History - Maternal Heritage, Volume II.
  • Guest Family History - Supplemental Petition, Volume III.

Guest's contribution to the early biological history of post conquest England

Further to the outline above, Volume 1 includes an unbroken set of genealogical records the Crown relies from Guest to his 13th great grandparents Gyles and Alice Guest, nee Styles of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire England . The materials take the reader beyond Australia, through Ireland to the Guest families origins in Row Heath, Kings Norton, Worcestershire, circa 1450 .

Having established John L.R. Guest's direct descent firstly from Gyles Guest (-1557) and Alice Guest (-1581) nee Styles of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire England with the Crown , Guest's maternal cousins, Dennis Keith Lillee (1949-) OA, MBE and Darren John Halifax (1965-), BA assisted in further research, and after a comprehensive and cicumspect review by the College of Arms of Guest's (2024) Volume II, Hallifax Maternal Heritage, the bloodlines contained within that book were deemed valid .

Guest, Lillee and Halifax were invited to continue submitting fresh genealogical evidence of their shared family history to the standard of proof the Crown relied . The evidence was presented in the form of a Supplemental Petition (Volume III) . The Petition was deemed necessary if His Majesty, King Charles III, was to consider declaring the creation of the Earldom of Oxford, 1066/67 for Edgar the Atheling (1051-c1126) by William I (1028-1087) .

Edgar the Atheling, is the brother of Queen Margaret of Scotland (1045-1093) and brother in law of Margaret's husband King Malcolm III of Scotland (1031-1093), and the ancient ancestral great uncle of Guest, Lillee and Halifax .

Prior to submitting fresh evidence contained within the Supplemental Petition on the 24th September 2024, Professor Tom Licence, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA, FRHistS, FSA, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia, Senior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge was able to give his expert opinion that on the balance of probability, William I did create the Earldom of Oxford peerage title for Edgar the Atheling (1051- c1126) in 1066/67 . Edgar is further recognised by the Crown as the last King of Saxon England r. Oct - Dec 1066. . .

The matter of declaring the creation of Earldom of Oxford, December 1066/67 is presently under consideration by King Charles III .
