Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, or Zenshinji, was established in 1966 as the first Soto Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States by Shunryu Suzuki.
Tassajara is part of the San Francisco Zen Center, which consists of two other practice centers, including Beginner's Mind Temple, also known as City Center, which is located in San Francisco, and Green Gulch Farm, also known as Green Dragon Temple, which is located in Muir Beach, Marin County.
Tassajara is set in a remote and secluded wilderness region of northern California, the Ventana Wilderness area of Los Padres National Forest, thirty miles east of Big Sur.
Tassjara is known for the rigor of its practice and the maturity of its students and teaching staff. It is highly respected within the Zen community of the United States and Japan, but also internationally. Many students are Zen teachers from Zen centers in other countries.
Tassajara accepts a select number of new students each year who must demonstrate both maturity of practice and strength of mind. People contemplating an application are encouraged to do at least one practice period at another practice center first. Many past and current residents first practice at Green Gulch Farm or the City Center of San Francisco Zen Center.
In exchange for working during the summer guest season, residents earn both a year-long stipend and credits to partipate in the fall and spring monastic training periods.
Tassajara that is open to the public from April to September. For more information, visit www.sfzc.com.
