Many of the city's residents are involved in agriculture and the town's main cash crops are citrus, olives, figs and grapes although Abasan is increasingly becoming more of an urban locality.
There are two major parts of Abasan; Abasan al-Kabera and Abasan al-Saghira. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics the entire town had a population of 25,477 at the end of 2007.
