He obtained a commission in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1915, and was sent to France. He died of wounds on 23 December 1915 at the age of twenty, having been badly wounded while on a wiring party, and is buried in the military cemetery at Louvencourt, near Doullens, France.
Vera Brittain, who had accepted his proposal of marriage four months before his death, was to include him in much of her writing at the time, including Testament of Youth; and some of Leighton's letters were included in her Letters from a Lost Generation.
