Reggie Herring

Reginald Wayne Herring (born July 3rd, 1959) is a former Florida State University linebacker and is the University of Arkansas interim head coach.

College career

Herring played at Florida State from 1978-1980, earning his bachelor's degree in criminology. As a player, he was a three-year starting linebacker, while leading the team in tackles three straight years, charting 452 total tackles in his career. This ranks him as 3rd all time to today. He is also third on the single season tackle list with 170 his senior season in 1980. During his career with the Seminoles, he played in two Orange Bowls and one Tangerine Bowl, being team captain for the 1981 Orange Bowl team. In 1989, Herring was inducted into FSU's Hall of Fame.

Coaching career

Herring first served as a graduate assistant coach at Oklahoma State University in 1981. After one year, Herring was promoted to coach OSU's linebackers, a position which he would hold until 1985. During this time, Herring worked with former Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt. In 1986, Herring left OSU to go to Auburn University, where he would also coach linebackers under then head coach Pat Dye. Currently, his stint at Auburn was the 2nd longest of his career, as he held that position until 1991. In 1992, Herring was offered his first defensive coordinator position at Texas Christian University but in 1994, just 2 years into the TCU job, Herring vacated his position to leave for Clemson University, to become the linebackers coach. Herring was promoted to defensive coordinator for the Tigers at the start of the 1997 season, and held that position until 2001. In 2002, the Houston Texans needed to fill a position of a linebackers coach, and an NFL job was too much to resist. Although Herring only held the Texans position for two years, he coached Jamie Sharper (who led the NFL in tackles in 2003). In 2004, Herring left the NFL to become defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at North Carolina State University. Herring's North Carolina State defense led the nation in total defense after ranking 89th in that category the year before. In 2005, Herring left North Carolina State to coach with his former coworker Houston Nutt at the University of Arkansas. At Arkansas, Herring has vastly helped the Razorback defense, improving in almost every statistical category. For his work in the 2006 season, Herring was a finalist for the Broyles Award, named after University of Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles.

On November 26, 2007, after Houston Nutt left to become the head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels, Herring was announced as the interim coach of the Razorbacks. It is the first head coaching job that Herring has had.

On December 11, 2007, it was reported that the Arkansas Razorbacks had hired Bobby Petrino to replace Herring as head coach for the 2008 football season.

Personal life

Herring is currently married to his wife Lisa. Together the couple has 2 children, Caroline and Adam. In February 2007, Adam signed a letter of intent to play football at Auburn Univerity.
