The city was formerly known as Trichinopoly. With excellent access to Road, Rail and Air Transport facilities, it has a small International airport.
It has many historic Churches, Mosques, Temples and monuments. It was a important town in the days of the historic rulers of Trichy.
Considered a good educational town it has schools that are hundred years old and many Engineering Colleges and a Government run Medical College. The Regional Engineering College and the Bharathidasan Institute of Management are also located in Tiruchirapalli.
