It originally referred to the Spanish population born and settled in the islands. During the nationalization movements and after the revolt and independence from Spain, it came to refer to the general population.
According to anthropologists, Filipinos are descended from people who spoke Austronesian languages. They migrated to the Philippines from southern China via Taiwan thousands of years ago. Filipino culture was heavily influenced by Spanish and American cultures.
Filipino can refer to any of the following:
- From or related to the Philippines
- The Filipino language, which is heavily based on Tagalog
- The Filipino people
