Filipino is a term relating to the people of the Philippines. It originally referred to the Spanish population born and settled in the islands. During the nationalization movements and after the revolt and independence from Spain, it came to refer to the general population.

According to anthropologists and linguists, Filipinos are descended from people who spoke Austronesian languages. They migrated to the Philippines from southern China via Taiwan thousands of years ago. Filipino culture was heavily influenced by Spanish and American cultures.
