The Chionite (from Middle Persian Xiyon = Huns) Red Huns or Kidarites (after their leader Kidara who established their dynasty) became noted around 320 CE when they began to encroach upon the frontiers of Iran and their Kushan state. They arrived there after their state known in Chinese sources as Qian Zhao was displaced by the Huo Zhao.

The similarities to the Chinese Xi-yung (Western Rong) barbarians is coincidental.
