The colors have various interpretations, one signifying the Muslim caliphates, while another gives a specific Sahrawi significance to the color scheme: red as the color of the blood of Sahrawi martyrs; the black stripe on the top signifying Moroccan occupation, while white stripe stands for peace and the green one for turning the desert green. Its similarity to the flag of Palestine is not intentional.
