The system uses positional data from inertial navigation systems or GPS to locate the aircraft in the world and relay navigational data to the pilots. Additional information from navaids can be overlaid on the system to aid instrument approaches and departures.
An FMS is linked to the autopilot, and is often coupled to additional multi-function displays. In some newer systems, the FMS can relay the aircraft's position back to air traffic control or airlines' dispatchers.
