Modine was the youngest of seven children in a tight-knit Mormon family. After he saw a documentary about Oliver!, he decided to become an actor. After relocating to New York in 1979, he worked several odd jobs before he met his wife and started landing roles.
His most recent arthouse film was in Le Divorce (2004) by Merchant Ivory.
