Unique Identification Authority of India is an Government of India organization responsible to implement Unique Identification Scheme (UID) in India. It shall own and operate the Unique Identification Number database and be responsible for its updation and maintenance on an ongoing basis. The chairman of the authority would have the rank and status of a Cabinet Minister.

The previously envisioned Multipurpose National Identity Card Project has been integrated with UID Authority of India.

Nandan Nilekani, former co-chairman of Infosys Technologies, has been appointed as Chairman of the authority.
