Gothic has been used over the centuries to refer to distinctly different things.

  • Originally a group of Germanic tribes (the Goths) and their language were called Gothic
  • Later the word (here originally a derogatory term used by Italians) referred to a style of northern European architecture, i.e. Gothic architecture
  • Gothic language
  • Gothic alphabet
  • A British literary genre from the late 18th and early 19th century, see Gothic novel
  • In the 20th century the word came in use for a certain lifestyle and music, see Goth.
