The border guard in the USSR was known as Border Troops, subordinated to the state security agency, NKVD, later renamed to MVD. Accordingly, they were known as NKVD Border Troops and MVD Border Troops.

In 1934 Border Troops were organized under the NKVD in the GUPVO (Chief Directorate of Frontier and Interior Troops (ГУПВО - пограничная и внутренняя охрана)

In 1939 they were recategorized into the GUPV (Chief Directorate of Frontier Troops)

The Border Guard units saw combat in the earlier years of WW II(39-42). However the Border Guards bore the brunt of the German assault, and , as such, suffered extremely high casulaties rates.

Another problem was the German's "Brandenburger" commandos. They had obtained NKVD Border Troops uniforms and led many infiltration missions across the Russian lines to do sabotage work. These spies weren't helpful to the units integrity and ability to operate.
