He was born in Yuba City, California, attended California State University, Sacramento and was a cattle rancher, businessman and member of the California State Assembly (1980-1986) before entering the House. In 2003 his financial disclosures revealed that his net worth is between $2,115,004 and $10,300,000. He earned between $35,004 and $115,200 from these assets.
Herger is married to his second wife Pamela Sargent and has eight children. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and chairs the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means.
Although he is the fourth ranking member on the Ways and Means committee he is not expected to enter the race to succeed chairman Bill Thomas when he steps down in January 2007.
